LibreWin is free and open-source software. Components carry different licenses depending on their role and dependencies:
- LibreWin OS — MIT License
- Weave (Windows compatibility layer) — GNU GPL v3.0
- Warden (security platform) — GNU GPL v3.0
In plain English: use LibreWin for anything — one machine or a thousand. Study how it works, modify it, share it freely. The GPL components require that modifications to those specific components remain open source. MIT components have no such restriction.
The OS itself collects nothing.
LibreWin has no telemetry. No analytics. No usage reporting. No crash reporter that phones home. No advertising. No forced cloud. What you do on your machine stays on your machine — because the infrastructure to do otherwise simply doesn't exist in the operating system. This is the permanent default and the promise.
The librewin.com website does not use analytics scripts, advertising cookies, or third-party tracking of any kind. You visit the site, you read the content, you leave.
Convenience you opt into
encrypted so even we can't read it.
LibreWin offers an optional account for syncing settings, preferences, and credentials across your devices. It lives in the Advanced tab — discoverable if you look for it, never pushed. You don't need it to use the OS. Most users will never create one.
Zero-knowledge sync. All synced data is end-to-end encrypted on your device before it leaves. The encryption keys are held only by you. When your data sits on our servers, it is an encrypted blob we cannot decrypt. Even if we wanted to read your synced settings and passwords — we physically can't.
What we process: your email (for account recovery), your device names, the approximate city from each sync check-in (derived from IP), and the encrypted blobs we relay but cannot read. That's it. We never see your files, never see your passwords, never know what apps you run.
Free tier: account identity, settings sync, device roster — up to 2 devices, no credit card, no time limit. Paid tier ($2–3/mo): adds encrypted credential vault sync, "my apps" restore, and unlimited devices.
The exit guarantee. Delete your account and everything we held is permanently removed. Your local data — files, apps, settings on your own machines — is untouched. The account was additive, never load-bearing.

That's the short version. The full warranty disclaimer is in the software license. LibreWin is pre-release software under active development. It may contain bugs, incomplete features, and compatibility gaps. Use it at your own risk.
The operating system is free forever. No license keys, no activation, no forced registration. You download it, you install it, you own it. There is no clickwrap agreement and no EULA to scroll through.
The account is separate. The optional LibreWin Account sync service has its own Terms of Service. The free tier costs nothing and imposes no obligation. The paid tier ($2–3/mo) is billed transparently, cancellable anytime, and never gates any OS feature.

LibreWin is assembled from several independently-maintained open-source projects. Each component is available under its own license. Key components include:
- Linux kernel — GPL-2.0 — the operating system kernel.
- Weave — GPL-3.0 — Windows API compatibility layer, written in Rust.
- Warden — GPL-3.0 — system security and monitoring.

"LibreWin" is a trademark of IronTree Software. The name and logo may be used to refer to the LibreWin operating system in articles, reviews, documentation, and commentary. You may not use the name or logo in a way that suggests endorsement, affiliation, or sponsorship by LibreWin or IronTree Software without written permission.
